Dedicated on the UN's International Day of Peace on September 21st, 2019, the Peace Park Garden at Whetstone Library updates the "Reading Garden" that has been at Whetstone since 1990. The garden project is part of the Clintonville Rotary's mission of "creating energy and momentum for peaceful conflict resolution around the world."
In the garden, a "Peace Pole," one of over 250,000 dedicated as monuments around the world, proclaims "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in eight languages. It follows the model of the Peace Pole Project began in Japan after Masahisa Goi, its founder, witnessed the devastation caused by World War II and the atomic bomb. He dedicated his life to spreading the poles as a form of prayer so that “the original blueprint for a peaceful world be carried out to perfection as soon as possible."
In 2022, the original pole was joined by eleven others. Created by artists in the Clintonville Arts Guild they each uniquely express the wish for inner peace, support for the planet, and freedom of expression.
One is topped with a "bee house" intended to attract native solitary bees.
The garden acts as an expression of the Rotary's mission to promote "positive peace": Peace isn't simply the absence of war or violence. Real peace is made up of positive activity for the good of others, including the environment we depend on.
Actions of positive peace--like building and maintaining a native plant garden--help to maintain harmony and understanding in the community, and support human and ecological wellbeing.
